Take a second and envision your typical morning. Is it calm and refreshing? Are you excited to start the day? Are you dreading getting out of bed… terrified of what the kids, who have already been awake for an hour, have gotten into? Is shirtless Ryan Gosling bringing you a piping hot cup of freshly brewed coffee while you watch the Today Show in your leggings?…. Wait, sorry… I drifted off there for a second….
Well, I may not be able to bring you a sexy, half-dressed man to make you breakfast, but I can give you the secrets to intentional, productive, and joyful mornings! And it all starts before you lay your head down at night….
Believe me, I know the struggles of running a business and caring for a home and children, and how at the end of the day, the only thing on your mind is head>pillow>dreamland. But by taking some time in the evenings, ideally after the kids are in bed, to do just a few simple things, you can get your morning off to a wonderful start, making for a more productive day and an all-around better mood. Here are three steps to achieving your perfect morning:
- Tidy up your central living space. If you’re like me, by the end of the day, the living room floor is cluttered with puzzles, books, art supplies, food crumbs, and various loveys that somehow made their way out of the bedroom (again). Though it’s easy to leave that mess alone since the kids will be right back at it in a matter of hours, having a tidy central space is a fantabulous thing to wake up to in the morning. So pick up the toys, whip out your fancy dustbuster, fluff the couch pillows, and breathe a sigh of relief as you survey your clean, calm space. Tip: Keep a basket or enclosed ottoman in the room to quickly put stray toys and kid things – makes cleanup super quick!
- Get your morning beverage set up. In our world, caffeine is the holy grail of morning routines. Whether you’re a coffee drinker, tea imbiber, or even a bone broth sipper (yeah, we love you guys too), the only thing better than taking that first warming sip is having it in your hands that much faster! So take a few minutes before bed and get everything set up on your kitchen counter. Put the water in the kettle, grind the beans, choose a happy mug, and shave that much time off of the groggy side of your morning. Tip: Keep a stack of tiny post-its and a
glitterpen in the kitchen and write yourself a love(me) note for the next morning. Because seeing “You’re beautiful” “You’re gonna rock this day” or “Kick today’s ass” first thing in the morning is pretty damn awesome.
- Set your intentions for the day. Before putting the day to rest, spend a moment in reflection. I find myself doing this as I set up my beverage. Revel in the happy feelings, release the sad or frustrating ones, and put it all to rest. Tomorrow is a new day and you will conquer it. Set three goals for yourself for tomorrow and write them down somewhere. And don’t you dare write down “do laundry”. The laundry will eventually get done… that’s not a goal. Think about your work, your kids, your significant other, and YOU and set some real goals. Starting your day off with intention will give you the focus and motivation you need to be über successful! Tip: Keep a dry erase board on your fridge to write these daily goals. It’s a central location that you’ll see right away in the morning and that you’ll visit several times throughout the day.
And there you have it. Fifteen-ish minutes to a freaking awesome morning! Remember – it takes 21 days to develop a new habit. But I promise… after waking up feeling amazing and ready to conquer the world that first day, you’ll have no trouble making this routine stick.
